ELEGY FOR THE WHALE

Who knows whereof the blue whale sings?
Perhaps of love or other things,

Like icy water and limpid pools
Or travels far in shrinking schools,

So plaintive a sound could be a dirge,
Tunefully, mournfully, facing the scourge

Of hunters decimating the pod,
So few are left to further what God

Designed to last eternally,
Forever coursing the deep blue sea.
