FOR WANT OF A RADIO

For want of a radio, Earhart was lost --
Amelia, daughter of the sky,

Your 'round the world flight in thirty-seven
Ended in the Pacific -- oh, my,

You crossed the Atlantic -- flew Hawaii to the U.S.,
But your targets for the day were vast,

Running out of fuel while heading for an island
Was a much bigger risk -- your last,

We shouldn't judge you too harshly --
The world was egging you on,

No one really knew where that dot on the map
That you sought for refueling belonged,

You went very peacefully -- just slipped away --
We'll see your young face no more,

Had you been later and male, maybe you'd
Have gone down in flames -- Army Air Corps.
