JACK WEBB

We thought that Jack Webb would never die --
The dourest detective, a real tough guy,

I see the reruns: thrilling Dragnet
And wonder, "Is he gone?" and yet

I know that it's true -- vaguely remember,
He faded away, like a dying ember,

Sergeant Friday, (his partner, too?),
Has gone the way of the buttoned shoe,

I wonder, "Will any of the current shows
Have staying power?" no one knows,

Try to remember the sound of "Green Hornet,"
If you're old enough, make a fist and a horn of it.
