I visited, with my girlfriend, about thirty years ago,
A rickety, weather-beaten town church,

My friend asked old Mr. Tharp a question --
It seemed that time might have left him in the lurch,

Although old, he recalled yesterday as today --
The first half of the twentieth century,

It turns out that he knew everyone in the town --
Who they were and all members of each family,

Impressed by his clear-headedness, I could only shake my head --
Asked if he knew me, he had a genealogical tale to tell,

He said, "I not only know him, but I also know his mother --
I knew his grandmother and great-grandmother as well."
