THE POTBELLY STOVE

Down at Hooper Junction was
An operator's shack,

On the UP Railroad --
Beside a bend in the track,

A cot, a desk, a phone and a stove
Were all the furnishings found

In that lone outpost of the line --
Hardly anyone came around,

Those were the days of steam locomotives
And operators could sleep for a

Couple of hours, when not needed for orders
To trains -- Hooper's raison d'être,

Rounding the bend, the headlight would glare
Thru the window of the sleeping alcove,

And many an operator has tried
To run thru that potbelly stove.
